Ozu is cited as one of the most essential Japanese auteur filmmakers alongside Kenji Mizoguchi and Akira Kurosawa. Therefore, it is unthinkable to talk about cinema in Japan without talking about Yasujiro Ozu's impact on Japanese and world cinema. Wen Chi Ölçel's reading will start with Ozu's "Tokyo Story,"; a film that has been voted among the top five greatest films of all time for several decades till today. A film that beautifully depicts the transformation of life in Japan and a perfect example of Ozu's minimalist filmmaking. Ozu's artistic style, which takes its roots from Zen's tranquility ( although Ozu strongly denied it.) and simplicity, constitutes the foundations of minimalist cinema. Ölçel will guide us through Ozu and his team's efforts to filmmaking and explain how they use the camera lens to form Ozu's now historic, unique visual language.
